California

Certified Authoritative: In California, you actually have to get elected in public primary to sit on the county committee - but it's pretty easy in spite of that - no big filing fees.

California requires committeeman election in a regular public primary election (easier than it sounds). For each assembly district or county supervisor district (depending on your county) seven people are elected to become the party central committee for that district and they also sit on the county central committee. The next election for district committeemen is in 2012.

In the meantime, you can seek alternate appointments or appointments to empty seats from your county chair.

We'll be publishing the election schedule information as soon as the Secretary of State publishes the election season calendar (filing dates, etc.). You should probably be prepared to file in Feb, 2012. Getting 45 signatures means you do *not* have to pay a filing fee. To get familiar with the process, it's best to use 2010 as an example - this document gives you all the details. Watch the CA SoS web site or your county web site in early 2012 for election filing dates to be announced. If you get 40 signatures for your central committee candidacy, the filing fee is $0.

During the 2010 primary election, PROCINCT.party was known as Precint California, we have have a lot of experienced old hands for California.
